English for Health Studies (OET) - NURSING

Course goals

English for Health Studies (OET) will focus on:

a) developing English speaking and writing skills so that students can describe, explain and discuss health issues in a professional context with greater clarity, fluency, accuracy and cultural awareness.

b) developing academic listening and reading skills on health topics in preparation for the OET test

c) OET test taking strategies and practice.

*Each 5 week session will include some of the above topics. Students can focus on areas of interest by arrangement with their teacher.

Language Skills

SPEAKING

Students will work with a teacher and learn to accurately describe, explain and discuss:

- Health issues and conditions
- Symptoms
- Causes
- Risk factors
- Treatment options
- Likely benefits and possible adverse side effects
- Future prognosis

FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE

Students will practice functional language skills such as:

- Greeting the patient / relative
- Demonstrating active listening skills
- Skillful questioning
- Showing empathy
- Reassuring the client
- Dealing with difficult patients
- Being assertive
- Maintaining a professional manner
 - Closing the consultation effectively

LISTENING

Students will listen to a) formal talks on health issues (lectures, media reports and OET practice tests) b) Patient consultations. They will complete note-taking tasks which they will discuss with a teacher.

READING

Students will access and complete online reading comprehension tasks based on articles on health issues including OET practice tests. They will discuss the articles with a teacher and each other in a live small group class (text).

WRITING

Students will be given writing task each week based on their need and goals. These may include OET practice tests (nursing), as well as other tasks on health issues to develop accuracy, fluency and appropriate style in written English.
